Experimental Studies on the Tisssue Alkaline Phosphatase Following Production of Shock in Guinea Pigs

Abstract
The behavior of tissue alkaline phosphatase in male guinea pigs, we¢¥ghing between 500 and 700 gm, subjected to experimental shock such as anaphylactic shock, electric shock, histamine shock, peptone shock and hemorrhagic shock was studied. 15 and 45 minutes after the various types of shock, the animals were killed by air instillation and tissue specimens were then obtained from the heart, lungs, liver, spleen, kidneys, adrenal glands, small intestine, testes and prostate of each animal. Then the distribution of alkaline phosphatase was studied histochemically and histological investigation was made of the above mentioned organs.
The author obtained the following results:
1). Significant histological changes of the various organs were not apparent 15 and 45 minutes after various kinds of shock. Circulatory disturbances and a slight degree of the de-generative changes were observed only.
2) AIcaline phosphatase is present in moderate concentration in the heart, lungs, liver, spleen, kidneys, adrenal glands, small intestine, testes and prostate of normal male guinea pigs.
3) The amount of alkaline phosphatase in the heart, lungs, liver, spleen, adrenal glands, small intestine, testes and prostate do not vary remarkably and is relatively constant when the animal is subjected to the various type of shock such as electric, histamine, peptone, and anaphylactic shock.
4) The alkaline phosphatase in the kidneys, also showed not significant variation to the above mentioned types of shock except anaphylatic shock.
5) The activity of tissue alkaline phosphatase, in general, seemed to have the tendency to be weakened slihgtly in case of hemorrhagic shock.
6) In contrast with above results, the kidneys after anaphylactic shock alone, contained larger_amounts of alkaline phosphatase than normal animals. The concentration of renal alkaline phosphatase was marked at the proximal convoluted tubules and also marked in the distal convoluted tubles.
